'separate from faith
know that job was the discoverer of the Big Bang? Do not believe it, but he was a priest, Georges Edouard Lemaître, priest, Belgian, ordained in 1923 and brilliant physicist and astronomer. Also proposed that the evolution of the universe had begun with an atom and its primitive estimated age of the universe was between 10 and 20 billion years (according to current estimates). Einstein rejected Lemaître's theory, because at that time viewed the unchanging universe. A few years later said that this was one of the biggest mistakes of his life.
I remember Lemaitre, just as he left the film Angels and Demons, which tells the fanciful story of the sect of the Illuminati that the Catholic Church fights to avenge the alleged persecution of scientists in past centuries: in short, do not lose this opportunity to pick out the old rigmarole of obscurantism of the Church towards science. Nothing could be further from the truth, because it is not a Lemaitre "White fly". You know that job was the father of modern genetics, Gregor Mendel? He was an Augustinian monk in the monastery in Brno, Slovakia at the beginning of last century. And, incredibly enough, who invented the artificial insemination? Lazzaro Spallanzani ... Emilia priest of the eighteenth century, who found time to experience the IVF (with the only difference now, he does not dream of applying it to the people) while he was performing his ministry between Reggio Emilia and Pavia. Therefore, many scientists are convinced Christians.
Strange? Not so much: the real obstacle to science comes from those who want to censor something, is not the Church that denies that infants and people with disabilities are serious people who deny the evidence that a child before birth is nothing but a child, denying the evidence that the drug is a danger to health, or that certain techniques of in vitro fertilization may have risks and should be assessed better. In doing scientific research, Christians and non Christians work together on everything, and often there is agreement on precisely those issues that the media is wrong to portray as the preserve of a cultural part. Scientific research can not be separated for example by the precautionary principle and respect for human beings in every stage of development, which is what the Church calls.
Not only via the fable which science should have no moral limits which some newspapers refer secularists: the search must have them all right ... if anyone enters a hospital for a headache could not be sure that your data will not be violated or that he is not used for experiments. For this reason there are strict rules, enshrined in universally recognized protocols, such as failing to fulfill the research is still paper. Finally, many scientists, chemists and ecologists in particular lay people, some do not see kindly to those who put their hands in the human genome, altering the natural biodiversity. Of course, that research must not have complaints but the complaints are just a front that is not what the Church: in 2005 the all-important stick in the scientific journal Nature a famous publishing those biologists who wanted Congress to abolish the word embryo because "too full" of moral meanings.
The film Angels and Demons is a thriller that, like many others have the right to express opinions, intrigue and entertain. But do seriously wanting to extract a picture of a Church and anti-scientific ... in a dark world where others are not the Church to be unscientific. The same science refutes this prejudice, the Church knows well teach the only serious attitude to nature: wonder.
